Inclusive Chiropractic for Every Neurotype

Redefining Accessibility in Chiropractic Medicine

At Mid-Valley Chiropractic Allied Health Sciences, we believe that true innovation in healthcare begins with a simple human question: How can we make care more accessible, more comfortable, and more compassionate for everyone who seeks it?

Our clinic stands at the forefront of neurodiversity-informed chiropractic medicine, pioneering a model that honors every individual’s unique sensory, cognitive, and emotional experience. We reject one-size-fits-all healthcare. Instead, we adapt to the patient — not the other way around — so that each visit becomes an experience of safety, dignity, and collaboration.

From “Cure” to Collaboration: The Evolution of Neurodiversity

A Movement that Reframed Medicine

The term “neurodiversity” emerged in the late 1990s as part of a growing movement led by autistic self-advocates who challenged the notion that neurological difference was something to be fixed. Instead, it was recognized as part of the natural spectrum of human variation.

This reframing transformed healthcare dialogue — shifting from curative models, which sought normalization, to supportive models, which emphasize autonomy, adaptation, and respect. Over time, diagnostic language followed suit: outdated or deficit-oriented terms gave way to affirming descriptions such as neurodivergent, autistic, ADHD, or sensory-sensitive.

Today, inclusive providers like ours work within this evolved framework — seeing patients not as “cases to correct,” but as whole people whose nervous systems simply operate differently. We don’t pathologize difference; we partner with it.

Honoring the Different Support Needs Hypothesis

Every Nervous System Is Unique — So Is Our Care

We recognize that neurotype does not dictate ability or need. The “Different Support Needs” hypothesis reminds clinicians that two individuals with the same diagnosis may have vastly different experiences, preferences, and tolerances.

In our practice, this translates to fully individualized care. Some patients thrive with more sensory input and dynamic communication, while others need calm, quiet, and predictability. We tailor not only treatment technique and pacing, but the entire visit experience — from sound levels and lighting to the clinician’s tone and body language.

These thoughtful modifications are not special accommodations — they are part of modern, ethical, and effective healthcare

A Sensory-Aware, Patient-Centered Approach

Building Trust Through Environment and Empathy

For many neurodivergent individuals, traditional medical environments can feel overwhelming — bright lights, chemical smells, unpredictable touch, or excessive verbal input can all provoke distress or shutdown.

Our providers work closely with each patient to establish comfort from the first visit. We can dim lights, reduce background noise, minimize sudden movement, and use consistent, gentle tactile pressure during adjustments. Communication is guided by patient preference — eye contact is optional, pacing is adaptive, and informed consent is emphasized throughout.

By creating an atmosphere of predictability and control, we allow the nervous system to down-regulate — making every therapeutic intervention more effective.

Leadership in Neurodiversity-Informed Chiropractic Medicine

Where Clinical Excellence Meets Advocacy

Under the leadership of Dr. Marisa Aptecker, Oregon’s first chiropractor endorsed by the Autism Society of Oregon, our clinic has become a statewide example of inclusive, trauma-sensitive musculoskeletal care.

Drs. Aptecker and Wilson continually pursue advanced education in Autism, ADHD, sensory processing, and trauma-informed manual therapy, integrating research-driven methods with authentic compassion. Our multidisciplinary model blends chiropractic, rehabilitative, and massage modalities to support motor coordination, balance, proprioception, and nervous system regulation across all neurotypes.

While our office is not yet equipped to safely provide care for individuals with Level 3 Autism, we proudly welcome all others — including those navigating the complex intersections of sensory sensitivity, anxiety, hypermobility, or chronic fatigue.

Empathy. Expertise. Accessibility.

The Future of Chiropractic Care

We view inclusivity not as a marketing term, but as a moral and medical commitment. Every patient — regardless of neurotype — deserves an experience that honors their body, communication style, and comfort.

Our providers may also recommend ergonomic modifications, home stretches, and workplace adjustments that make daily life more comfortable and sustainable. These practical supports extend the benefit of care far beyond the treatment room.

At Mid-Valley Chiropractic Allied Health Sciences, we are redefining what it means to practice medicine with empathy — blending the science of neuromechanics with the art of human connection.
